Wed Mar 31 - Lone Lady @ Paradiso
Julie Campbell’s first gig outside of her native Manchester was at 2006’s South by Southwest festival, where she was tipped as “One to Watch”. Now, having signed to Sheffield’s Warp Records (more generally noted for techy electronics a la Aphex Twin or Autechre) to release her first album Nerve Up, she’s bringing her Telecaster/drum machine attack to Europe.
Lonelady, as she is more usually known, makes tune-heavy, slightly lo-fi pop driven by wiry, brittle post-punk guitar playing. Nerve Up does conjure images of an 80s Manchester, but they’re somehow fresh, dance-friendly ones, removed from the usual Factory-fetishising nostalgia that new acts from the city often have to put up with.
Expect to hear much of the album at her Paradiso show, from the edgy, propulsive disco of “If Not Now” and “Early the Haste Comes” to gorgeous basement torch song “Fear No More”.
Starts at 20.00 and costs 8 euros + membership
