Old school punk rockers Bad Religion play at the Melkweg tonight. Amazingly this is the band’s 30th anniversary tour and they will release a new album soon (their 15th!). It should be a lot of fun!

Ferocious and unhinged, when These Are Powers perform live, it is a kind of spiritual journey, a futuristic fire dance hailing from Chicago and Brooklyn. The bass smolders, topping its low-end sub-rumble with a high-end flutter; abstract beats emanate from the electro-acoustic stand-up drum kit. And piercing through is Anna Barie’s guitar while she and Noecker call and respond. Barie blasts through a litany of expressive guitar sounds and full-throated yelps and howls with a confrontational, explosive energy that often finds her entangled with audience members, leaping through the air, or sprawled on the floor in front of the stage.

Support comes from homegrown Palmbomen, as in: warm and thick drinkable beams of sun, radiant, gushing yellow liquids. music.

Next to residents The Heykids, former resident at now-closed legendary club Stämning at Cocktail Club Grodan in Stockholm Bellaboo graces us with her presence. Having playedat Flow Festival (Helsinki), Fuse in Brussels, along with numerous other european hotspots its time for her to be introduced to the Amsterdam scene.

As always the one day/night event is themed and this time ‘celebrates the freedom and tolerance with the theme “It’s a Religion!”‘ – not sure what that quite means but from looking at previous years pictures, anything goes, the bigger and bolder the better.

MUSIC:

Some highlights from the program are: the world premiere of Junkie XL’s new project Cosmic Rave, the new sensation Baltimore Rye Rye, the comeback of Whitey rounder and a final show of the apostles of the disco Aeroplane.

Mr. Valtifest himself Joost van Bellen, with a colorful parade to over-see the grand opening. The percussive electro of the Brazilian Mix Hell DJ’s, Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura) are interspersed with sunny beats from Tommie Sunshine. New live acts and DJs such as L-vis 1990, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool and the new sensation Baltimore Rye Rye stand alongside famous artists such as Whitey, who recently signed for one of the best albums of the year.
