Band members Scott and Grant give music journos a run for their money with this great list of bands you should and NEED to check out

In the run up to their Paradiso show (details here) we asked perfect-Scottish-indie-rock act Frightened Rabbit to give us a run down of their top tips and favourite bands to watch out for. So without further a-do here’s brothers Grant (drummer) and Scott (singer) with their cream of the crop choices:

Grant ‘here are a few of my current favourite things.’

The Antlers – Hospice
This album is definitely the album I’ve listened to more than any in the past year. The emotion in the songs is so raw and the imagery is so blunt that there’s no getting round what the theme is on this record. The constant allusions to hospitals, cancer and relationships make for a very dark record and the pain that comes with a dying loved one is evident simply in listening to Peter Silberman’s voice throughout the record. A beautiful but extremely harrowing listen. We toured with them last year too and I don’t think I heard a bum note in the whole 2 weeks!!

John Knox Sex Club
These guys are a 4 piece from Glasgow. They’re pretty much Rock n Roll with a Scottish poet as a front man. Absolute class. As yet they’ve released nothing but their live show is something pretty special. Rousing, crunchy guitar sounds mixed with pounding drums and all finished off by Sean Cumming preaching for his life at the front. A standard way for them to end the show is for Sean to sing the last line “We stay as close, as close as we can” and walk round the crowd giving out hugs!! Lovely.

Three Blind Wolves
Formerly known as Ross Clark and the Scarfs Go Missing these guys are gonna be a big deal in Scotland and the UK over the next year. They’re still a young bunch of lads finding their feet but once thise feet are found you better be prepared. Heavily influenced by a lot of Americana but with a bit of a mean streak Ross loves to vent his frustration with the world via songs which at first seem good but after a few shows you realise they’re fucking great. If you like early Ryan Adams, Neil Young and a wee bit of Bright Eyes check this young lad and his steeds out!!

Admiral Fallow
This is another great band from Glasgow. They remind me a lot of Okkervil River and a slight hint of Fleetwood Mac in there too! I have seen them a couple of times and Louis has one of the most spot on voices I’ve ever heard. The band is made up of university trained musicians which can sometimes make for a group of show offs who don’t know the meaning of the word restraint. That’s not the case here and the melodies are really allowed to shine on this and the musicianship is not the main art on display. I also love the use of male and female vocals on records and there’s a fucking clarinet!!!

Where the Wild Things Are Soundtrack – Karen O and the Kids
I’ve been a massive fan of the book by Maurice Sendak ever since I was a wee boy and when I heard there was to be a movie I have to admit I was dubious. However as soon as I went to see it I fell in love again! The soundtrack is absolutely perfect too. It takes you right back to when you were a child and when singing meant screaming at the top of your voice regardless of tuning worries!! Of course Karen O has written some cracking tunes on the album but it’s really all about the feeling of being taken back to those days when monsters were real and the future wasn’t really so important.

Scott ‘here are my picks!’

Meursault – Nothing Broke
This is an EP by a wonderful band from Edinburgh. They record nearly everything at home and the results are jaw droppingly beautiful at times. Their singer Neil Pennycook has one of the most powerful voices I’ve heard in a long while. Both this and the full length album ‘Pissing On Bonfires And Kissing With Tongues’ are released via the
Song By Toad label, and they have a new record due in April.

Take A Worm For A Walk Week
Glasgow’s (and perhaps the world’s) most deranged band. This sounds like it was recorded in an asylum… I always picture them wearing hospital gowns when I’m listening. The band’s technical ability is insane, and there is plenty of method in their madness. Nutjobs!

Withered Hand
This is the pseudonym of Dan Willson, an Edinburgh based songwriter with an innocent voice and a dirty mouth. His songs skip between self-loathing, anger and joy within the space of a few lines, and it’s all set to a gorgeously lo-fi, shoegaze backdrop. His latest album is called Good News and it’s one of my favourites of the past year.

Over The Wall
This band is comprised of two of the loveliest chaps you could hope to meet, making charming, life-affirming Scottish pop. I challenge anyone to listen to their song Thurso and not have the melody running through their head for the next week. If you ever get the chance to see them live, I guarantee you’ll leave with a massive grin on your face.

Silver Columns
This is the camp-disco collaboration between Johnny Lynch (Pictish Trail) and Adem. It sounds like LCD Soundsystem crossed with The Communards. The thing I really like is that they produce brilliant songs, as opposed to dance music by numbers. It’s outrageous and soulful at the same time. Time to get the gold jumpsuit out of the wardrobe…

We talk to Leon and Bas about their endless projects, the Dutch music scene, Gary Oldman and the existence of the Universe

Catching up with the members of experimental garage rock group The Moi Non Plus, other wise known as the founders of Subba Cultcha, otherwise known as organisers of great music and film events, otherwise known as all round extraordinaires of many a music and art scene .. it can be a little intimidating, completely fascinating and ultimately shocking at the amount of work they can fit in one week.

Collaborating with our friends over at The Four oh Five in the UK, we sat down with Bas and Leon just before the recent (Subba Cultcha curated) Health, Fuck Buttons and Picture Plane gig at the Melkweg.

405 – As a band you have a lot of creativity outside of the music you play (Subba Cultcha Magazine/Subba Events. How do you juggle what you do (time wise) and which side of things do you prefer?

Bas – It all links together pretty well so it’s pretty efficient. It seems like a lot but everything is connected. They’re not separate things, it’s sort of one

405 – What about band practice?

Leon – We don’t need practice (laughs)

B – We do occasionally practice on Monday mornings at 10 o’clock

L – We try or incorporate it into our working week

B – It’s a good way of starting a week

L – And we have projects. A couple of weeks ago we were in France in a rehearsal room there and wrote songs for a whole week, that was really nice

405 – So does that mean there’s a new record coming out?

L – Early stages

405 – Will people be able to hear them on your upcoming tours?

B – Yeah probably. We play a mix of older stuff and new stuff

405 – So for an English audience; what is the Dutch music scene like?

B – It’s quite interesting. I mean Amsterdam is a small city, it’s not like Berlin or New York so that limits the amount of venues and bands. And with Subba Cultcha, because of that also, after about 5 years now, the scene has become more connected and more visible as well.

There are some bands which are OK, sometimes you can think that it could be a bit more challenging

L – In any case there’s an audience for this kind of music. With the shows we promote there’s always a lot of people showing up. There is a base for a scene to grow beyond what it is now

405 – Do you feel it’s harder to be a massively successful band when you don’t come from America or the UK? Or does it not matter?

B – I actually have no idea. I don’t know how hard it is to become a successful band in America. It seems like it’s easy to become successful if you’re from Brooklyn right now for instance, but I don’t know how many bands are playing in the bowels of Brooklyn. A lot of bands come out of there but maybe its only 1% of the people playing

L – A lot of the bands that we’re interested in that are coming from the States, they’re really really good. The quality of bands are really high and if the same quality bands come from here there would be a decent chance of them getting the same results

405 – So what bands then, from Holland or Amsterdam are you listening to and that you really like?

B – I think zZz are quite a nice band and that’s about it maybe

405 – aren’t you putting out a record by Hospital Bombers?

B – Yeah and Hospital Bombers, that’s a nice band as well. But going back to what Leon said, in that sense it might be harder for bands to be here because the level of bands of bands here is quite low. People seem to be quite easy satisfied. If a band makes sort of alright music and has a certain quality then immediately they get a booker and then maybe a record label and that’s quite easily done. So maybe bands don’t develop so much

L – The climate here in Holland is that a lot of people really want bands to become successful. We have all these competitions and magazines writing about the local heroes; then there’s subsidized practice spaces and venues. In a way it’s really nice to be in a band in Holland, it’s quite easy to get something done but the edge might be missing

405 – Do you think then that Dutch bands are publicised well outside of Holland?

B – I think that there isn’t so much interest here apart from Bonne Aparte, from the north of Holland and around that scene there is some interesting stuff. But in general I don’t think there are so many bands of interest to go abroad. So maybe there is a press effort to export the music, there’s even money available for that and it happens but it’s often done without the quality and often without some sort of a vision. For us, of course, it’s maybe easier because we are operating in the structure of booking bands from abroad, making a magazine, you know, having connections with bookers and promoters. So for us it’s easy to put our band out in the right position

L – Also the people that we work with are interested in the kinda music we play because it’s all part of a similar scene and that way we can out our selves in the right context

405 - Originally your album was self released. How do you feel about it being released again through someone else (Small Town America)?

L – It’s really nice. Up until now we’ve always done everything ourselves so it’s really nice to see other people being enthusiastic about what we do and making an effort to get it heard by the right audience. I’m really excited about it

B – It’s a true effort as well, they’re really working hard and it’s really nice; very good to see.

405 – Where does the name come from?

L – It’s from the song by Serge Gainsbourg called ‘Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus’ which means ‘I love you, neither do I’. It’s an old sentence

B – It’s quite a famous song. There’s a lot of moaning in it

L – A lot of sensual moaning. Our music has a kind of sensual moaning to it

B – You can call it that (laughs)

L – Sensual moaning by bearded men in their thirties!

405 – The latest debate we’re running on our site is ‘Who would play you in a movie about your life?’ Who would play you?

B – As in a character? Or an actor? That’s a nice question

L – There’s this one actor that people always say I look like but I don’t remember who he is. Apparently he’s pretty famous

B – It’s you man, like a David Lynch moment

L – Exactly!

B – You are that actor and your life is the movie

L – What’s the name of that guy who plays Agent Cooper?

B – He plays in Desperate Housewives as well

L – Ah man

B – You wouldn’t want to be that guy. He was cool when he played Agent Cooper

L – What sort of answer are you looking for?

405 – Well it’s a big question, I guess some people have often thought about it

L– I have never thought about it

B – My Mum maybe, I would find it interesting to see my Mum play me

L – That’s some deep shit. This guy, who I look like, he would play me. I think he plays in Leon which is funny ‘cos that’s my name

405 – Is it an English actor? Is it Gary Oldman?

L – Yeah, I think it’s Gary Oldman!

B – Maybe Burt Reynolds for me

L – (laughs)

B – But doesn’t Gary Oldman and Burt Reynolds play in that film..?

L – That film about that band? (laughs)

405 – We like the Subba way of getting a band to interview themselves, so with that said, what question would you like to ask yourselves and what would the answer be?

L – Well that’s the thing, I got the idea once off a documentary on this really weird television channel and Tom Waits was being interviewed by a young guy at his house but he was asking him questions Tom Waits had thought of. It was the most random questions about the speed of ostriches and stuff.

B – Wasn’t there one question about a frog as well? Because that’s what I want to know, is it really true that, like in the movie Magnolia that frogs can actually fall from the sky. Apparently there’s a myth and it talks about raining frogs

L – Is that a question?

B – Yeah, is it possible that there are raining frogs?

L – Yeah, I think it’s a ridiculous myth

B – This is a hard question

L – But that’s what I was going to explain. That’s what I like about it, that he asks really strange questions that he actually had really good answers to. Right now I don’t know if I have a question that’s both odd and interesting and that I would have the full answer

B – I know something. The other day I saw some documentary about Stephen Hawkins and he’s looking for the final, you know, particle; the final formula that explains the existence of our Universe. Would you want to know the answer?

L – The answer to what?

B – Well Stephen Hawkins is looking for the ultimate answer that defines the existence of our Universe

L – Is he close?

B – Would you want to know? Would it be a satisfactory knowledge to have? Where it all came from

L – Yeah, I would like to know. I don’t think I would understand it, but I would like to know (laughs)

B – Apparently the big bang was totally silent (laughs)

405 – Finally, what does the rest of 2009 have in store for you?

L – The years almost over. Well, we’re playing in the UK next weekend then we’re going to New York for the Subba Cultcha showcase with three Dutch bands; Bon Apart, zZz and Hospital Bombers and a whole bunch of international bands as well. Then we’re going to stick around in New York and play some more shows. We’re doing a semi-acoustic set for radio which could be interesting

B – Could be very interesting

L – Could be the end of the band (laughs)

B – Or the end of their sound-system

L – And then when we come back we have a whole month of anniversary parties for 5 years of Subba Cultcha; a festival in the Melkweg with 15 bands. We’re releasing an art book with all kinds of artists we really like. We’re hosting shows by Scout Niblet and Banjo or Freakout, guy from London.

B – Another night in Utrecht, small festival type thing

L – Then I think December we’re going to be completely..

B – Drained, heavy or super hyped up. The we’re making the gift issue and we’re going to give away so much stuff

L – That’s it, pretty much. We try to write new songs in between

405 – On a Monday morning

L – Yeah ‘cos we were excited about the stuff we came up with so we want to move forward with that. We’re making a dance record

B – It’s quite different. I mean it has the same sort of energy that the record had but it’s also quite different as well, which is good. It’s more dance-y

405 – And people can hear that on your tour?

L – Yeah people can hear that

405 – Great, looking forward to it.

You can catch The Moi Non Plus on tour in London/Manchester this week and be sure to check out their online magazine Subba Cultcha for great music, cool art work and news for their international events.

Back for their third Paradiso show, promoting their seminal debut album and selling out the small hall to breaking point The XX seem to have made it, big time. We were there to capture the London based quartet as they delighted a mesmorised audience with their dark-pop and effortlessly sexy music.

'The future of electronic music' - The Guardian

“If Grum is what the future of electronic music sounds like – and we’re pretty sure he is – save us a spot on the dancefloor.” So says the British Newspaper The Guardian and we’re not ones to argue with them on this occassion.. or most for that matter.. it’s a good read.

Here’s what they had to say:

The background: We love overstatement and exaggeration as much as the next hype-merchants, but even we recoiled a bit when we read of Heartbeats, the latest single by highly touted Scottish dance whiz Graeme Shepherd aka Grum: “This is the greatest song of the 21st century, and if anyone tries to tell you otherwise they are an idiot or they haven’t heard it or they’re an idiot who hasn’t heard it.” Well, we’ve heard it and – greatest song of the 21st century? Probably not. Then again, we know how it feels to hear a new piece of music and be so swept away that you do, indeed, feel like proclaiming its greatness from the nearest rooftop (it doesn’t have to be a rooftop; somewhere lower-down can be just as good, especially if you want people to hear you). We got rather carried away ourselves recently when we heard the Starsmith remix of the Girls Can’t Catch single, and the bit at the end of the Dizzee single Holiday where it suddenly goes trancey made us come over all peculiar. It’s great when that happens. You might even say it’s what pop music’s all about.

For more of the article.. go here innit.

Also on the bill is Tron and Lecktrick and night hosts Salvador & Meneer de Beer

Starts at 23.00 and costs around 10 euros

width="419" height="218" />A few weeks back Amsterdam Event Guide invited one of our favourite local bands The Stutters to interview one of our favourite non-local bands, the brilliant We Were Promised Jetpacks.

Stutters front-man Mical Noelson met up with Michael Palmer (guitar) and Darren Lackie (drums) just before their phenomenal gig in the Paradiso small hall to talk about making music, creating identities and Tony Adams.

MN (N) – So since you’ve been here, have you had chance to explore the city?

M – Well, the ones that have been here before are out exploring

N – They left you?

L – Yeah to do this interview, ha ha

N – Oh sorry guys

L- Yes you bad, bad people

N – I’m sure you’ll get loads of time after the gig

N – Do you guys get along when you’re on the road?

L – Yeah, we have loads of fun

M- Especially last year, three of us lived in the same flat. So on average we spend about 23 hours a day with each other and on tour its 24, so it’s nothing really

N – So what inspired you to start the band? You already knew each other from when you were young yeah?

L – Well we played with other people. Adam and Sean started off when Sean used to play the drums and then they wanted a new direction. So then I joined, then Michael joined a wee bit later and we played our first gig April 2003. That was our first four-piece gig. We just joined a band because it was fun, we all played instruments, we were all friends, just something to do. We never once thought we’d be coming and playing in Amsterdam, stuff like that.

N – Was your name back then the same as it is now?

M – No, it was changed after about two years

L – Yeah , we had a bad name before that, ha ha. It was The Winkle Experience. There’s a story behind it, it wasn’t just ohhh winkles

M – Just that was what everyone else was like!

L – Ha, yeah. So that’s why we changed it

N – Do you know what that means over here? It means the shop experience

L – But what’s winkle in German? Means small I think

N – But in Scotland it’s your penis?

M – It could be anything you want it to be

L – Nine times out of ten, it’s your penis

N – So how did you come to the name We Were Promised Jet Packs?

M – You know those awesome Ricky Gervais pod-casts? He said something about hover crafts, blah blah blah, Jetpacks and it went on the list

L – We had a big list

M – With things numbered and it got late and we said, lets just pick one and yeah, that was it

L – We really have to come up with a more exciting story. People are always hoping we’d come up with something good and we just say that and you see the interviewer going ‘ah..’

N – So how do you go about writing your songs?

M – Adam will come with a guitar part or just something to start with and we’ll talk about it for a bit, then jam it for a bit and then hate it for a while, change something and then love it

L – Sometimes we’ll be sat there like ahhhh, we just need one bit and someone will come up with something and that’s it, we’re all happy

N – Well I’m a little bit disappointed in that because that’s the way my band makes music and I was hoping you had some sort of magical thing you guys did, ha ha. Bit of my own investigation there sorry

N – Were there specific artists you looked up to when you first started out?

L – We listened a lot to Biffy Clyro, the older stuff

M – The first three Biffy albums really

L – They were pretty big albums for us. Early Kings of Leon and they all listened to The Stokes. A lot of local things too now that we’re actually friends with

N – Well you’ve got a chance to plug them now if you want?

M – Well theres a band called Dupec from Edinburgh , Lyons, ah there’s so many. Over the Wall, especially, especially them

L – There’s so many more out there

N – So that’s www dot myspace slash.. all those bands

L – Ha ha yeah, just like that

M – Just go to ours and it’s just our top friends but make sure you go to ours first!

N – Lets talk about your songs, get a little deeper! They seem quite dark at times, what are they all about?

L – We’re just four depressed people who sit in the dark all day, with the curtains closed ha ha

N – Yeah, shouldn’t you be wearing all black?

L -These are the darkest clothes I’ve got (he’s wearing a light grey t-shirt), should’ve seen me yesterday

M – You were very bright

N – So I had some questions for the singer, as you said he writes most of the songs

M – I’ll answer for him

L – Yeah lets try it

N – OK, so the song Quiet Little Voices, I’ve listened to the lyrics and they seem to be a bit sinister, maybe about a murder or something?

L – When I’ve heard him (Adam) describe what the lyrics are about before. It’s something like, when you go to sleep as a child you have no worries, you just go to sleep and now you have all these things going through your head. That could be completely wrong but I’ve heard him say something similar before.

M – Its not like specific events, its just, you know… stuff, can’t think of the right word

L – He doesn’t really go into it so we don’t go into it

N – Ha ha, like stay away from it.. it sounds weird

M – Yeah I’m out

L – He’s a weirdo

N – So how does it feel when you’re up on stage? Is it a really powerful thing for you?

M – Definitely, if it sounds good on stage it’s just incredible

L – You don’t even need a busy room. If it sounds great, then nine times out of ten we’re having a great time. Actually no, if it sounds great we’re always having fun and if it’s busy its twice as good, a good feeling as I’m sure you know too

N – Well I usually have crappy sound so no, ha ha.

L – We now have a sound guy

N – Manager / sound guy?

Andrew – tour manager

L – Friend. Shepherd.

M – Friend first

N – So he holds the bucket when you’re puking at two o’clock in the morning?

N – You’ve just released your album to critical acclaim and urm, there was no question there ha ha

L – It’s a good statement. It’s true, we released an album.

The rest of the band, lead singer and guitarist Adam and bassist Sean join the interview.

N – To me, the songs of the album feels quite big and the sound feels more intimate

M – Well we didn’t think it sounded like that, we wanted it to and if you say that’s what it sounds like, that’s amazing

N- In my band, I’m the lyricist and whenever I’ve been in an interview situation they never ask about the lyrics . So is there an underlying thing between the songs? We were talking before about the lyrics and I might have got it wrong but in Quiet Little voices it sounds like it’s about a murder and a victim

A – I think every song I have people can think it’s about a murder, I don’t really mean it like that. Sometimes I read about domestic abuse and stuff like that but its not like that. I’ve never had any domestic abuse issues or anything like that, ha ha.

L – A wee skeleton there

A – There was that time I gave my mum a dead leg! Ha ha. No, it’s just the way it comes out. Usually I write lyrics and sometimes they’re about things that annoy me, that I can’t really do in real life or something that I can’t handle. A lot of the songs are about the really simple, get up, eat, play, pretty much what I do now.

N – Well they mentioned the band name’s about being a kid

A – Yeah. But not everything’s black and white, especially as you grow older

N – Did you make a conscious decision to sing in your own accent?

A – No, but there was definitely a point. When I was younger I used to sing a lot more posh, like really posh and then I started to relax a bit more and feel a lot more comfortable and started pronouncing things. So a couple of years ago I started to lean that way. A lot of Scottish bands, well every Scottish band now sings that way. It’s all a bit sickly

N – Soon you’ll get English bands with Scottish accents. But in a way, through that you’ve given yourselves your own identity

N – What can people expect from your shows?

Sean – Adam sweating

A – A big red head and face. Lackie does the windmill

L – Sean staying perfectly still. He can stay perfectly still whilst wearing a really warm jumper on stage and not sweat a drop

S – I stay to a half meter radius

N – Like old defenders in football that wouldn’t go past the half way line

L – He’s Tony Adams

N – Well it’s been great talking to you, good luck tonight. Look forward to seeing you and good luck with the tour

We Were Promised Jetpacks are back in Amsterdam for the London Calling Festival at the end of November so make sure you don’t miss them.
